Run, don't hide

From the mist arose faces young, and old, hands tattered and bloody, with blood curdling screams erupting from every face in sight. He recognized a few of the faces in the pit of dark mist. He saw his uncle, who had died in a motorcycle accident, the faces of some of the missing children he had seen on the milk cartons his mom buys, and many others. However there was one face that confused him. In the fray he saw the face of Ally's mother. This took him by surprise because Ally had always told him whenever he asked her about her mom that she was just on a really long business trip. "Why would she lie about that" Aaron thought. However Aaron decided he did not have time to think about it  and needed to get out. As he fumbled through his bag in pitch black he found a familiar object that could help him escape. An oil lantern wedged at the very bottom of his bag. His grandfather had given it to him as a gift for his 9th birthday. It had a picture of a pale lady in a black dress holding a bouquet of purple flowers.  The light it emitted was faint, but not faint enough to be completely useless. He slowly pulled the light out before abruptly holding it straight in front of the ghosts eyes. The ghosts emitted even higher, more blood curdling screams and quickly moved out of the way. He quickly ran through the opening in the mist the ghosts had made and, ran down the long, winding stairs with a speed he never knew he could muster up. The mist tried to catch up to him, but he was too fast and had gotten too much of a head start for them to catch up to him. However, when he made it down to the bottom floor, when he tried to push the door free, it did not move one inch, no matter how hard he pushed and kicked the door it stayed in place. Eventually the tiny cracks in the walls emanating moonlight closed, and his lantern burned out, leaving him vulnerable and horrified in complete darkness.
